What does "TDI" stand for?
Turbo Direct Injection
These first TDIs were called the AHU-1Z version of the 1.9 liter 4-cylinder engines. Peak horsepower output rated at 90 at 4000 RPM. Doesn't sound like a whole bunch of horsepower BUT what is important is not the horsepower, it is the torque. It is the torque that pushes the car down the road, not horsepower. These TDI engines reach their peak torque at a low 1800 RPM. The engine idles at 900 RPM so at double the idle the engine has maximum torque power. Simply put, it means the engine gets the job done, gets the power put out at a way lower RPM than a gas engine. The engine turns over way less times to get the car down the road. This is why any diesel engine is so fuel efficient and why a TDI engine lasts so long.

The United States is the only country in the world with 98% of our cars running on gasoline. Biofuel production and other alternative fuels used in non-gasoline cars will help overcome the sluggish economy, produce new jobs, clean the air we breathe and help loosen the grip of the oil companies.
